Georgia Asylum and Immigration Network
Born from the Atlanta Bar and the Atlanta legal community, Georgia Asylum & Immigration Network (GAIN) is the leading nonprofit immigration legal service provider in Georgia. Because of the visionary leadership of Atlanta's pro bono community, GAIN has been able to provide over in pro bono legal services with a growing staff and budget size. Since 2005, we have helped over 5,000 men, women, and children with pro bono referrals, direct representation or advise and counsel.
In 2005, GAIN was founded as the Atlanta Bar Asylum Project (ABAP) in order to train and support volunteer attorneys taking on pro bono asylum cases in one of the toughest immigration courts in the nation. At GAIN, we are inspired by our clients and powered by our pro bono. Our staff attorneys train and mentor volunteer attorneys, screen cases, and offer technical assistance in immigration matters. GAIN attorneys also take on a small percentage of cases with complex needs through direct representation. Over time, our impact has grown as we replicated the Asylum program’s successful model of training and mentoring volunteer attorneys to create the Victims of Violence program for immigrant victims of crimes.
At GAIN, our clients are asylum-seekers, and immigrant victims and survivors of human trafficking, domestic violence, sexual assault, and other crimes. GAIN clients are part of a high-need population that requires a sophisticated legal response and culturally-specific services for complex trauma. GAIN fills a critical gap by providing free legal services for immigrants fleeing persecution and impacted by violence. Our clients often represent multiple underserved populations. Over the past few years, we have seen an increase in our asylum cases due to violence abroad and frequent changes to immigration policies. Almost two-thirds of our clients identify as women and girls, which disproportionately affect women and teen girls, and we also provide resources and referrals for legal and social services for our clients in order to help them meet as many needs as possible while their immigration case is pending.
Just $250 could provide a family with a one-hour consult which puts them on a path to legal representation and allows us to screen for other needs such as mental health counseling, shelter, or other social service needs.
Make a contribution today to make an impact for immigrant families here in Georgia, and to help GAIN work toward our vision of safety, freedom, and opportunity for all.
