6 Best Practices for a Positive Courtroom Experience

1. Dress for Success: Courtrooms have a formal atmosphere, and dressing appropriately is key. Shorts, beachwear, and clothing with offensive graphics or messages are inappropriate. Additionally, hats should not be worn unless required by religious custom and practice. Your attire should show respect for the court and the proceedings. Suits or a collared dress shirt and slacks are appropriate for men. Suits, neutral dress tops with slacks, or modest dresses are appropriate for women.

2. Follow the Protocol: While courtrooms may have slightly different procedures, you should always address the judge as "Your Honor" and stand when speaking or when the judge or jury enters or exits the courtroom. These small gestures show respect for the court and can make a positive impression.

3. Phones Silenced: Most courts allow cell phones, but they may require them to be turned off or silenced. Even a vibrating phone can be a distraction and may be seen as disrespectful. Make sure your phone is off or, better yet, leave it in the car to avoid any issues.

4. Non-Verbal Communication: Your body language can say as much as your words. Maintaining a calm demeanor, making eye contact, and avoiding any signs of frustration can help create a favorable impression in court.

5. Be Prepared: Preparation is crucial, not only for the case itself but also for the way the day unfolds. Being organized and ready for questions or situations can help everything go smoothly.

6. Respect the Schedule: Court schedules are often tight, so punctuality is important. Arriving early and being ready to go when called can help ensure your case proceeds without unnecessary delays.
